Welcome to New Regional Co-Reps

I'd like to give a big shout-out to our two outgoing regional reps, Cindy Parry and Cindy Brendel who have worked so tirelessly to expand our regional activities and regional exhibition program over the past couple of years.  

Thanks in large part to their efforts organizing the exhibition of our 12x12 quilts before sending them to auction, this year our region KS/MO/OK had the most auction submissions from a medium sized region.  Thanks to everyone for donating to the auction!!

And now a big welcome to our new incoming regional reps,  Rhonda Denney and Susan Stevenson.  Thank you so much ladies for stepping up to help SAQA in this capacity!  Hooray!

Meeting minutes, February 15

We had a houseful (18) SAQA members attend the studio tour at Cindy Brendzel's on February 15, 2020.  

On entering, CB logged all incoming auction quilts

After welcomes to visitors and new members to our region, we did introductions.  

CParry reminded all that we will need new region reps because the Cindy's are stepping down mid-2020.

CParry gave a quick reminder that the auction pieces were going to hang on March 1 at the Shirley Stiles Gallery in Westwood, KS for the month of March with thanks to CBrendzel and KHansen for handling that exhibit.

CParry and CBrendzel reminded all about the IUAH exhibit and informed the group that IUAH has changed some of the exhibit guidelines; now only wanting art that is 12x12, now a $10 fee for entry, and we now will be sharing the exhibit space with other artists and media.  An email had gone out a few days earlier about the changes.  The IUAH exhibit will be for the month of May.  CParry will pick them up at IUAH at the end of the exhibit and send auction pieces to SAQA and return the other pieces with CB's help when she returns from QSDS.

CParry gave an update about delightfull exhibit - It has been shipped to Indiana and is currently hanging until early May. It will then be driven immediately to Albert Kemper by the Cindy's.

Maria Shell, a SAQA artist from Anchorage will be holding a workshop on May 23 from 10-1 at Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church.  The SAQA store is open and ready for sign ups at saqa.com

We then worked with the SAQA trunk show pieces separating into two rooms each with half the work to view the pieces and decide which 3 would be placed first thru third in a show and why.  It is interesting to see which group choose which piece and why.  There was a little overlap, not much but some good discussion.  All seemed to feel it was a good and interesting exercise.

We then had show and share as usual and as usual, there was some amazing work shared and we learned a new technique for attaching wire/slats (thanks Marge Banks).  Claudia shared that she prints on fabric by fusing Wonder Under to white or lightly printed fabric and running one sheet at a time through her printer.  (thanks Claudia)  

The exact next meeting has not been determined -- either June 13 or 20th and will be a studio tour at Cindy Parry's.  See next newsletter (late May) for info.

Exhibition of 12 x 12s and other art quilts: Submit Soon!

Once again, we have been invited to exhibit our SAQA auction 12x12s prior to sending them to SAQA.  In addition, at one of the exhibitions, there will be space for additional pieces.  Please read Cindy B's information below and don't miss this great opportunity.

Are you working on your 12x12 SAQA auction pieces? For all the first-timers, these are to be 12x12 pieces (that's inches!) on any theme you choose. These are small, comparatively fast and easy! You may make ONE piece destined for the auction. This piece, if gotten to Cindy Brendzel by Feb 10, 2020, will exhibit for the entire month of March at the Shirley Stiles Gallery in Westwood, MO. In the past, we’ve exhibited there in February. We were given an option to change our month to a longer one! (every extra exposure day is good, right?) J We grabbed it to give more exposure for our region members. IF there is room and you make a 12x12 NOT intended for auction, we may include it in the exhibit as either a display piece only OR as a ‘for sale’ piece. All pieces must have labels AND 2” wide sleeves which are set in ½” from edges and from top. Ideally, your 2nd piece, if you choose to provide one, has not been exhibited here before.

Please note that this year, the 12x12's will be managed by Cindy Brendzel and her TBD assistant. Please contact her if you wish to help or have any questions. IF you are local, you may also bring your 12x12(s) to the region meeting being held at her house Feb. 15.

When you ship/turn in your piece to Cindy B., PLEASE be sure to INCLUDE:

a) brief artist statement about the piece for gallery book
b) short bio for gallery book including contact info
c) title of piece
d) NSF or sale price
e) is it intended for auction when exhibits are done? Y/N
f) $1.50 for shipping IF your piece is intended for auction
g) return postage IF you are wanting the piece returned if not sold OR only intended for exhibition purposes
h) don't forget to provide 2" sleeve per instructions - hanging devices will be provided



These same 12x12 pieces will be on exhibit again for the month of May at the InterUrban Art House (IUAH) in Overland Park, KS. A NEW exhibit space for us!

In addition, the fabulous 50+ piece SAQA travelling trunk show will be on exhibit there at the same time with our 12x12 pieces. Our job is to FILL THE REMAINING GALLERY SPACE! That might be a challenge: it’s a good sized space so we need lots ‘o pieces. Per IUAH: "The price point is $150 and under for 12x12 pieces, BUT you can price larger pieces as you desire". The ArtHouse will take a very modest 30% commission. These pieces will hang towards the end of April with a reception on the 15th of May (usual 3rd Friday event). All pieces MUST have labels and sleeves: 1/2” from quilt edges top and bottom. Sleeves are 4” wide for the larger pieces. 12x12’s should have 2” wide sleeves to accommodate our slats. On these larger pieces, PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP your intention on providing a piece for sale for this portion of the exhibit. These pieces should be original works. If we are lucky enough to get swamped with works, IUAH reserves the right to curate pieces. We'll be accepting delivery in early April. Regional Meeting Notes, November 2019

Happy New Year everyone.

It was almost 2 months ago that we got together at Marnie’s and seems like it was so much longer.  I’m glad the Holiday Season is over, what about you?

Marnie Clawson was such a good host  and if you missed this you missed a lot. First of all, her studio is to die for especially to someone like me that is grateful to have a small spare bedroom as a studio.  She did a trunk show for us.  She talked about her various processes and she had an indigo pot for us to dip things into. While we were busy with all that her husband was pressing grapes from their vineyard for this year’s vintage AND she sent everyone home with a jar of homemade grape jelly.  It was a fun day. 

We also took the time for a brief “business” meeting. Here is what was discussed…

The Cindy’s shared their efforts to try and convince  SAQA HQ to have the 2023 conference in KC.  Time will tell how this plays out. 

The Cindy’s are also scheduled to give their SAQA presentation in Columbia, MO at Booneslick Trail Quilt Guild on April 6^th, 2020. Hopefully, some Missouri SAQA members can attend.

We reminded those in attendance of the upcoming opportunities for the 12x12 auction quilts. We have been asked back again this year for a Small Works exhibit at the Shirley Stiles Gallery in Westwood, Kansas for the month of March.  In May the auction quilts will be shown along with a SAQA Trunk Show and other larger pieces our members create for sale at the InterUrban Art House in Overland Park, Kansas. 

There was a discussion about the tasks and responsibilities of a Regional Rep.  The Cindy’s will be stepping down after the May meeting to give someone else a chance to play a greater role in this wonderful organization.  If you are thinking about volunteering to take over we encourage you to check out the SAQA website and read through some of the info in the representative pages.  You can get an idea of what’s involved.  I can speak for both of us that it has been a very positive experience.

We all brought a bag lunch but one of Marnie’s friends supplied several homemade pies for dessert from her friends’ pie shop to-be.  Apparently we were testers for the bakery she will be opening in town soon.  The pies got rave reviews. 

Of course, we had our Show and Share.  Many of us brought our finished pieces from the Jo Alberda workshop.  It’s always fun to see the different varieties we can make from the same project. 

Regional Meeting Notes: May 18, 2019

Minutes for May 18, 2019 at the Johnson County Central Resource  Library, Overland Park, Kansas

We started with a quick round of welcomes and introductions. There were 18 attendees, including one guest.

We gave a big congratulations to all members who were accepted into our upcoming de.light/FULL regional exhibit.  There are 31 works from 20 artists. The show premiers at the Leedy-Voulkus Art Center in Kansas City, MO on July 12^th 2019 and continues until August 31, 2019.  There will be a closing reception on August 31^st as well. 

Also, a big ‘thank you’ to May Kay Fosnacht (KCity), Shannon Conley (Moore, OK) and Karen Hansen (KCity) for their work on the promotional postcard and Gallery/Artist Bio book. Our exhibit is well represented by their hard work. 

We briefly talked about the SAQA booth at the upcoming Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival.  We need a couple more volunteers to step up and help by sitting with the booth during the show.  Please click https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0949a9a82eaaf58-saqa to sign up. 

Cindy P mentioned the Spring Quilt Market is wrapping up this weekend here in Kansas City.  It was a chance for some to see it live and in person by volunteering to help.  Thanks to those that did.

Cindy B gave a quick update on the ‘Variations on a Theme’ workshop scheduled for August 17th with Joanne Alberda.  Online registration and payment of fees will be through the SAQA Store and plans are that the site will be live by the end of the week.

Cindy B, Cindy P and Kathy Suprenaut (Lawrence KS) shared their experiences of the SAQA Annual Conference – ‘Threads of Innovation’ held in San Jose, California.  We were very impressed by the workshop that talked about incorporating drawing app technology into art quilting; another on how to use Instagram to develop your brand as an artist; and yet another that presented art quilting as a bridge for disadvantaged teens to engage in social justice issues.  Wow, who knew? 

Cindy P and Kathy Suprenaut gave the group a small taste of the conference by re-enacting their prepared ‘Lightning Talks’ at the meeting. Kathy’s talked was on her art quilt series titled “What did Ming Miss?” and Cindy P’s was “Creating Your Day” or how to say NO and to prioritize your art.  Everyone really enjoyed them. 

A member of the new St Louis pod, Candyce Grisham, joined us and gave a quick over view of their group and upcoming activities. 

Andrea Luliak (Oklahoma) was our ‘Member Spotlight’ speaker.  She proved what we already knew – she is multi-talented, and endlessly curious when it comes to quilting techniques and the use of color and textures.   During the course of her presentation we saw her full range.  She showed us samples of her earliest work including fabric pieces so small it’s hard to imagine handling them let alone hand-stitching them. She also had hand made dolls and art quilts that incorporated many different surface design techniques. She is certainly an asset to our group. 

We ended with a show and share and a door prize won  by Charlene Van Walleghen. Yay, Charlene!

Regional Meeting Report March 2, 2019

March 2, 2019, Oak Park Public Library, Overland Park, KS

We started with introductions, as usual. There were 18 people in attendance. We started with Cindy P talking about the exhibit of 12x12 Auction quilts that had just been taken down from the Styles Gallery in Westwood, Kansas. There were 30 quilts in the exhibit and it was an excellent representation of what the region is doing. The exhibit was well received and they have already asked back again next year. Cindy P has been trying to find another venue for an exhibit before the quilts are due at the SAQA headquarters for the online auction. Only those quilts intended for the auction will go to global in NM. If you requested your quilt be returned, you can expect to see it after the end of the Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival where they will be last exhibited.

There was a discussion about whether or not we wanted the SAQA booth at the Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival, at the Overland Park Convention Center June 13-15. The question was - does the group want it there, and are there enough volunteers to manage the booth for the 3 days of the Festival. And we need to check with the Festival to see if there is still time to get the okay from SAQA and the Festival coordinators. Nine volunteers stepped up and Cindy P said she would follow up with SAQA and the Festival.

UPDATE: It’s a go. The booth will be at the Festival and Michele Dondell is heading up the project. It is likely that an online signup sheet will be in your inbox as time nears. PLEASE be sure to help your region out and sign up for a couple of hours at the booth.

Cindy B presented Regional Financial Report. With the speaker’s fees the Cindys earned for the region in 2018 we started the year with $1,293.98 in our account. We announced plans for upcoming meetings: in May Andrea Luliak is scheduled for a Spotlight presentation. In August we have arranged for JoAnn Alberda, a SAQA member based in Iowa, to give a full day workshop titled “Variation on a Theme” on August 17. More details will be available soon. The workshop is perfect for art quilters, but also for the traditional quilter willing to move out of a comfort zone. The class will be offered to SAQA members first. If it does not fill, it will be opened up to non-SAQA members.

There was a brief discussion on the “de.light/FULL” juried show. The SAQA Call for Entry closed on February 28th . Forty six quilts were submitted. The jurying process is just starting and all artists should except to be notified by April 15. The exhibit is scheduled to open July 12th at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center in Kansas City, Mo. Next it will be at the Modella Art Gallery in Stillwater, Oklahoma in November-December 2019. In 2020 the exhibit is expected to be shown scheduled at The Quilter’s Hall of Fame in Marion, Indiana and lastly in St. Joseph, Missouri at the Albrecht-
Kemper Museum of Art. Don’t forget Modella is asking for mini-workshops/demos during
the exhibit. They are also asking for hand-crafted items to sell. You need to contact them directly to check on their interest in your particular items.

SAQA is looking for a conference venue for 2022 and there was a discussion on what it would mean to our region and should we lobby for it. We did our usual much enjoyed round of ‘Show and Share”
After a break we introduced a collage project. Everyone was given an identical packet of color prints, a word cut out of a magazine and a colored paper to use as a background. Using scissors and a glue stick we were to create collage in 25 minutes. After the collage was finished we shared our piece with the group and talked about the process. We did these three times. It was inspiring to see how different each of us approached the exercise and everyone was surprised by the finished pieces. The Cindys set a challenge to everyone to use one of the collages as inspiration for a finished quilt by the May meeting. Any size, any theme. It was fun!

Meeting Report- November 17, 2018

The meeting started with a welcome and introductions all around. Ten members attended including one new member Michele Dowdell. Andrea Luliack’s was acknowledged for a 3-hour drive from Oklahoma to get to a meeting. She is a valued regular member! The Cindys gave an update on their four SAQA regional fund raiser presentations in Edmond, OK, North Kansas City and Lawrence, KS. The presentations went well and they were greeted with appreciative audiences. After each of our presentations, several attendees expressed interest in SAQA and thanked us for the information.

Since the last quarterly meeting the Cindys also had the opportunity to visit Stillwater, OK to meet the Director of the Modella Gallery. Modella will be exhibiting our De.light/FULL show November 7th – December 14th, 2019. In addition to the show they are very interested in having small quilted
pieces to sell in the gallery while the show is on display. If you are interested in sending items for sale PLEASE CONTACT Valeria Zayat-Bloodgood at vzb2@yahoo.com directly and cc the Cindys. Let Valerie know your connection to SAQA and the show and what you have to offer for sale. You do not have to have a piece in the show to sell small items. She knows what her audience is interested in, and she may ask for digital images.

The Cindys are talking with two well-known textile artists about the possibility of coming to our region for a workshop in 2019, Deb Boschert (deborahsstudio.com) and Joanna Alberta (joannealberda.com). You may want to visit their websites.

This year’s 12x12 SAQA Auction Quilts are due mid-January. We are finalizing the galleries for exhibit before sending to SAQA. Contact the Cindys with any questions. idyllways@aol.com and/or
cbren588@gmail.com. The Cindys brought the SAQA Trunk Show they’ve been using in their presentations to our regional guilds. It is made up of 58 original quilts from members all around the world. In addition to the fun of seeing all these inspirational pieces we decided to use them in a mini jurying exercise. First we divided the trunk show into two random piles and attendees into two
groups. Then we informed them that they are jurying a quilt show and they have to pick the ‘Best in Show’. It was a blind jurying process, that is, they could not turn the quilts over to find out who made them. After 20 minutes they switched and did the same for the other quilt pile. There were some
spectacular quilts, both in technique and content and they had a tough decision to make. The question is: did both groups select the same quilts as Best in Show, and what does this mini exercise say about the quilt jurying process? Answer: No, they didn’t, and it says a lot about the judge’s expertise, personal preferences, favorite color, time of day, etc. We had a good discussion.

SAQA KS/MO/OK Regional: May 19, 2018 Meeting Notes.

The meeting starting with introductions. There were 15 attending including 4 guests.
One of the guests, Merete Veian is a SAQA member all the way from Norway. She has
been visiting the US for a couple of weeks and we were lucky to have her join us.
Cindy P and Cindy B shared their impressions of the SAQA Annual Conference in April
in San Antonio, Texas. The first two days were devoted to Representative activities and
workshops. It was an opportunity to network with other reps and share their successes
and lessons learned. The conference was packed with speakers, Breakout Sessions
and a favorite – Lighting Talks, 16 fast and focused presentations, each only 6 minutes
long, and on a wide range of topics. If you get an opportunity to go to next year’s
conference, take it. Everyone is very welcoming and friendly and it’s in San Jose,
California!

Cindy B announced an Oklahoma venue has agreed to show our 2019 exhibit
‘de.light/Full’. Modella Gallery in Stillwater, Oklahoma has confirmed the dates of
November 7 – December 14, 2019. As a reminder: de.light/Full premiers July 12, 2019
at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center in Kansas City, Missouri. It will then travel to the
Modellla Art Gallery, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. It is also scheduled at the Albrecht-
Kemper Museum of Art, in St Joseph, Missouri June 13 – September 13, 2020.
We have approached two venues in Indiana. Stay tuned.

Cindy B talked briefly about transitioning the next Regional Reps. It’s not too early to
consider stepping up and playing a bigger role in our activities and/or planning on
becoming the next Regional Rep(s). If interested, you are welcome to shadow us at
any time. We generally meet for at a Panera once a month to talk over what we want to
do and split up the tasks going forward. Most of the behind the scenes work is done
with email.

Linda Frost gave a ‘Member Spotlight’ presentation. Her transition from her earlier art
quilt experience to her current work is truly inspiring. Everyone commented on her color
choices and use of hand stitching to enhance each piece. (Can you add to this?)

The group shared “Show and Tell” and a couple volunteered to have their piece
critiqued by the group.

Our door prize went to Jane Bonachi. Next meeting will be on August 18 th .

SAQA Regional Quarterly 2/17/18 Meeting Notes

We met at the Central Resource Library in Overland Park, Kansas at 1pm and started with a welcoming and introductions.  There were 14 members in attendance.

The ‘business’ portion of the meeting included a discussion of the Auction Quilts.  Cindy P and Cindy B combined the 12x12s received with a couple of extra quilts from member to create a ‘Small Works’ Exhibit at the Shirley Stiles Gallery in Westwood Kansas.  There were 19 quilts in all. See photos on Facebook. The show was very well received, and we are considering doing it again next year.

The Auction Quits will also be on display at the KAW Valley Quilt Guild Show in Lawrence Kansas April 7 & 8.

Immediately after the KAW Valley Quilt Guild show, a great majority of these pieces will go directly to Harper’s for exhibit for about a month approximately April 11 to May 11.   After that, all exhibitors will be contacted to be confirm disposition of their 12x12’s: return to maker or send on to SAQA annual auction.

Cindy P made a request for more Auction Quilts from our region.

Jim Brown gave our first ‘Member Spotlight’ presentation.  He had been selected by the Director at the UCM Gallery of Art and Design to give a presentation to the students and we asked him to give the same presentation at our meeting.  He talked about his background as an architect, his introduction to quilting, and brought a number of his amazing quilts that show his artistic progression and skill as an artist.   It was a very interesting presentation and we very much appreciated seeing his body of work.

Linda Frost graciously accepted an invitation to be our next Member Spotlight at the May meeting.   We look forward to that and hope you can attend.

Anyone interested in a future Member Spotlight presentation, just let us know.  

We are a large region and our members are pretty far flung.  Starting with the next newsletter, we hope to have 2-3 member bios.  We may never meet some of our members but we’d like to know who they are and not just a name on a roster.  Cindy P will be contacting members and asking them to write a bio (up to a page) including information about their art work and experience, of course, but also about their family life, other interests … anything they’d like us to know about them including a photo or two of the member and a piece of their work if they so choose.  Names will literally be pulled from a hat (okay, maybe a bowl) then Cindy P will ask those members to please write their bio for inclusion in the next newsletter. Each of those members will have about 6-8 weeks to submit it to Cindy P.

We had another critique exercise and discussion with the group. The intention is to feel more comfortable with the concept of critiquing and being on the receiving end of a critique.  

Then we did Show and Share.  Several attendees brought current works.  Cindy B showed a small quilt titled ‘Ancient Chinese Ruins’ and also brought the drawings and images she used as inspiration and during the process of creating the piece.  

Our next quarterly meeting is May 19.  

SAQA KS/MO/OK Region 11/18/2017 Meeting Minutes

There were 12 SAQA artists at the meeting including a couple guests.  Thank you to everyone who came. You made the meeting a great one.

Member’s news included a first-time solo exhibition by Jackie Stoaks in Shawnee, Kansas.  Congratulations Jackie!

There was a brief discussion on efforts to bring an outside presenter to a meeting in 2018.  Cindy B and Cindy P are still working to make that happen. If there are any KS/MO/OK regional members that have prepared a presentation or workshop and would be interested in presenting to the members please let us know.  

Cindy B spoke on efforts to find an affordable photographer familiar with fiber art.  The images submitted with a Call for Entry are very important and you want to make sure the images submitted are sharp and meet all requirements. We interviewed 3 photographers local to Kansas City.  Generally, we found the cost to shoot a quilt and receive the full and detail digital images asked for in SAQA Calls varies depending on volume. The cost was as low as $10 per quilt up to $600 for a half day in the studio. If you would like to know the names of the 3 we talked to let me know and I’ll send you more specific info. In all cases the quilt artist should be very specific about the digital requirements and expect to help make sure the quilt hangs properly for the shoot.  One photographer had a board to pin the quilt on and another asked that the quilts have sleeves. Always call ahead to discuss it with the photographer beforehand and get a quote. Also, if you know of any professional photographer in our region that is experienced with fiber art please post in Facebook. And remember information on the SAQA website is very helpful for those that want to learn how to light and shoot their own work.

Regarding the upcoming exhibit of our 12” x 12” Auction quilts. We will exhibit our Region’s 2018 Auction Quilts before forwarding to SAQA National for their Auction website.  The venue is The Shirley Stiles Gallery in Westwood, KS. Your 12”x12” quilt is due no later than March 15, 2018 and can be on any subject. It will be exhibited during April 2018 and then shipped to National.  We encourage everyone to participate. There is a contest between Regions and the one that has the highest participation wins. The prize has been a dollar amount deposited in to the region’s account and that means more money to use for workshops.  You can see the 2017 Auction Quilts on the SAQA website. If you get your quilt and artist statement to us by mid-January we can get it to them in time to select one or two in their city newsletter.  CONTACT ME and I’ll give you info on where to ship.

Don’t forget our Changing Landscapes exhibit at The Gallery of Art and Design at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, MO.  The exhibit will be there January 8, - February 3, 2018. Another opportunity for everyone to see it. There will be an opening reception on or about January 10th.  Date to be confirmed.  

An Exhibit Committee for our 2019-2020 SAQA Regional Exhibit, will be formed in early 2018 to plan the details and timeline. Please consider joining us to make this exhibit a great one.  The first decision we’ll make as a group is the theme. You will want to be there. We already have two venues secured for this exhibit and we are working on finding at least one more in Oklahoma.

We had a show and tell session and then discussed how to properly critique artwork. Two members held up quilts for the group to use as practice.  We had a lot of fun with it.

Workshop Opportunity at the Gallery of Art and Design at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Missouri

Our ‘Changing Landscapes’ exhibit is moving to the Gallery of Art and Design at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Missouri for an exhibit in January 2018. 

During the exhibit UCM would like to bring one of the SAQA artists to the campus for a workshop with art students. They are looking for a SAQA artist to give a workshop/presentation to a class of Fiber Arts students. It will take place on a Tuesday or Thursday during the exhibit.  The class time is 8am - 10:45am and your presentation should last approximately 1-1/2 to 2 hours. If you have developed a workshop and/or are interested in presenting and discussing your work to the students let me know.  

Please email to me a proposal or a detailed description of what you would present and/or demonstrate to the students. The Gallery Director at UCM will make the final decision. 

UMC's budget is limited. There will be an honorarium for the artist but they cannot reimburse expenses. If you are interested but would need to travel a distance and stay overnight in the area, let me know.  I am also planning to attend and can offer a guest room in Overland Park.  The Director can also provide an overnight accommodation in a guest room at their Warrensburg home for any long distance artists.   We’ll figure it out.

Welcome and introductions:  Cindy Brendzel and Cindy Parry are the new KS/MO/OK Regional Reps.  There were 14 members attending, including one visitor and two new members!  Welcome Karen Moore and Jane Bromberg

We re-capped the ‘Changing Landscapes’ exhibit at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center in Kansas City, Missouri.  Everyone agreed it was a show to be proud of. Leedy-Voulkos is interested in having us back in 2019.  They are in the process of making some internal changes, so we agreed to follow up with them in writing to confirm the June and July slot in 2019.  Cindy B will follow up.

There are 21 artists and 32 pieces representing the KS/MO/OK Region. Those artists have already been notified of the exhibit moving to the Gallery of Art and Design at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, MO.  The exhibit will be there January 8, through February 3, 2018. Another opportunity for everyone to see it.  

Many thanks to Mary Kay Fosnacht and Karen Hanson for their excellent work in leading the KS/MO/OK Region for the past 2 years, and especially  their efforts on the ‘Changing Landscapes’ exhibit. Everything went smoothly.

Cindy P read a report from Linda Frost regarding the SAQA booth at the Kansas City Regional Quit Festival.  The booth had a lot of activity and signed up seven  new members.  Thank you, Linda and all volunteers who sat in the booth during the Festival. There were 8 Auction quilts on display in the booth. They elicited many compliments. .  

Cindy B and Cindy P have been working to find a professional photographer local to the Kansas City area that is familiar with shooting art quilts to the SAQA standards…and at a good rate.  We are following up on one so far and Jane Bromberg will contact a photographer who worked for Kansas City Star Ouilt books to ask is he would be interested.  More information to follow.  

Cindy B and Cindy P are planning for the next exhibit to travel in the Region beyond Kansas City in the summer of 2019. So far we have a confirmation from the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph Missouri for June 12-September 13 of 2020.  We are now looking for venues in Oklahoma and further west in Kansas to fill the time in between.  We have visited the Sabitini Gallery in Topeka and Cindy P will visit one or two in Oklahoma.  More to follow.  

An Exhibit Committee with be formed in early 2018 to decide on a theme and plan the details.

Cindy B and Cindy P have been in contact with the Rep from Iowa with the idea to collaborate on the exhibit.  More to follow.

Cindy P has arranged for our region to have a SAQA Trunk show in Sept./Oct./Nov. of 2018.  She’s contacted 16 guilds in the region with a proposal to introduce SAQA and art quilting to their membership.  The presentation will include a 12-minute video about SAQA, the Trunk show exhibit, and local SAQA members to show examples of their work and speak to their process.  A portion of a speakers fee will be earmarked for our SAQA Regional account.  We will use the account to bring speakers and/or workshops to us.

Cindy B will follow up on the suggestion to send out a Call to all our Regional members for a workshop. UCM has asked if we could offer a workshop during the exhibition in January, plus there will be other opportunities to schedule one at a meeting or a future exhibition. More to follow.  

We would like to exhibit our Region’s 2018 Auction Quilts before sending to SAQA National next year to be posted on the websiteThe Shirley Stiles Gallery in Westwood, KS has space for our auction quilts.  Both Cindy’s visited the venue and took pictures for future reference.  Thanks to Sue Chaffee for her initial contact.   Your 12”x12” quilt is due on March 15, 2018 and can be on any subject. It will be exhibited during April 2018 and then shipped to National.  We encourage everyone to participate. There will likely be a contest between Regions and the one that has the highest percentage of membership participation wins.  The prize has been a dollar amount deposited in to the region’s account.  More money to use for workshops.   More details to follow.  You can see the 2017 Auction Quilts on the SAQA website now.   

Cindy P sent an EM to Jason Pollen to see if he has interest in being a future presenter.  Cindy B has located a large venue which will allow us to hold presentations.

Cindy P has also visited Interurban Art Center’s new venue to check out their workshop space for future reference.  They have tables, chairs and sinks nearby for easy access.  Interurban will charge $40/hr for us to use the space and we may bring in any instructor we choose.  Interurban Art is 8001 Newton Street - Overland Park, KS 66204.  See interurbanarthouse.org.

A couple of other ideas were briefly discussed:  a Zoom meeting to include more members perhaps for the February meeting?  An opportunity quilt?  Cindy P will follow up.

1.      Introductions - 2 new members; Rosemary Cromer and Rosemary Hopkins – welcome!

2.      Linda Frost gave an update on the Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival (KCRQF) June 15, 16, 17. SAQA will be in booth #122

a.      Contact Linda to help tend the booth – lots of times are still available.

b.      Linda will have 2 passes available to volunteers to hand off to each other.

c.       Linda collected 12 x 12 auction quilts to be hung in the booth **please remember to register your auction quilt on line by June 1^st! Please contact Linda if you would still like to donate or show a 12x12 quilt in the booth.

                                                              i.      Auction quilt donors: Carmen Rinehart – Kansas Sunset, Rosemary Hopkins – Blue Hydrangea, Linda Frost – Danger Fish, James Brown – Jackson 1, Kathy Suprenant – You Are My Sunshine, Jackie Stoaks – Mini Blue, Cindy Parry – Enduring, Karen Hansen – Life Lessons, Cindy Brendzel – Fan Lights, Ruth Powers had 2, but I didn’t get the titles, and Carol Jones turned in a piece earlier. d.      We will not be selling anything in the booth except for SAQA memberships, however, we will have cards with the Leedy-Voulkos exhibit info and sample books.

3.      Thanks to Cindy Parry and Cindy Brendzel for stepping up to be the next regional co-reps! They will begin their term as of August 1^st.

4.      Lincoln Conference Highlights – 4 members present at the meeting were able to attend the conference; Cindy Parry, Ruth Powers, Karen Hansen and Mary Kay Fosnacht. (Cindy Brendzel also attended the conference) We shared what we personally thought were highlights:

a.      The regional reps meeting before the conference was packed full of information, there were brainstorming sessions, leadership tips and much more.

b.      The one day tour of the Quilt Study Center and Museum was excellent and there was a side trip to the university’s apparel storage where they pulled out pieces of interest and a small group session with Michael James.

c.       The “lightning talks” were fascinating. Artists present 20 slides for 20 seconds each representative of their work or studio practice. Here is a LINK to a webinar where Lightning talks were featured.

5.      Karen Hansen gave a budget update and reported on the exhibit expenses. We should have approximately $200 left in the budget when the exhibit is over. In addition, all proceeds from the exhibit catalog will be credited to our region.

6.      Exhibit marketing and advertising

a.      Approximately half of the available post cards have been distributed for various venues and guilds. If you need some, contact Karen or Mary Kay.

b.      Business size cards will be available at KCRQF to be handed out.

c.       The amazing exhibit catalog is available on Amazon. Please share the link!

d.      Cindy Brendzel has completed the bio book and it will be on display at Leedy-Voulkos during the exhibit.

e.      All artists and regional members are encouraged to share the exhibit info through their social media – Facebook, Twitter, etc. (see the 8 ½ x 11 flyer below) I misspoke at the meeting when I said you could share the postcard via our Facebook page. Since we are a “Secret” group, we cannot share anything that is not “public” – for ex. Amazon links are public, so those are allowed.       So… download the flyer below and post or email or print it, OR you can download the postcard from the BLOG to share the postcard.

7.      Show and Tell – Fabulous as always!

Hi All, the catalog for our upcoming regional show is now available on Amazon (link below if you want to share it with anyone else).  You can get it for $10, and proceeds go to our regional SAQA group who will be able to use the funds to help support future shows.  The postcard (front and back) for the show is shown below, feel free to download and distribute it to help drum up publicity.

Meeting Notes

Attending: 13 Members, no Guests

The meeting took place at the Johnson County Library - Lackman branch. The quilt art on the walls, and on display at the library, are by the Fractured Fabric Society. The landscape quilt behind Cindy Parry is by Susan Stevenson and the black and white quilts are by SAQA member Rosemary Cromer.

1. Cindy Parry gave a presentation on her Tsunami / Japan disaster quilts. It was great to see them up close and ask questions about her techniques and hear her reasons and inspiration for each one. Thank you, Cindy!
2. Cindy Parry shared what she learned about shipping her quilts and gave some specific tips. She noted that Bill Reker of SAQA was very helpful and gave her good advice.
3. Show and Tell
1. Andrea Luliak – 52 weeks of 7” square art quilts, an example of tri-axial weaving
2. Claudia Mazur brought a piece in progress inspired by Susan B. Anthony and the right to vote.
3. Karen Hansen – Disappearing 9 patch, Just Passin’ Through, Mixed Messages. Just Passin’ Through was accepted to the Nebraska exhibit, “Passages.” Congratulations, Karen!
4. Cindy Parry – Illumination, Life Seasons 1,2,3,4 and 5, and examples made from a class with Susan Lenz.
5. Linda Frost – mono print from a class taken at the Lawrence Art Center
6. Kathy Suprenant – mono print from a class taken at the Lawrence Art Center
7. Mary Kay Fosnacht – Female Cardinal, United We Stand, Strait of Georgia from Thetis Island which was also accepted to Nebraska’s “Passages” exhibit.

*Passages will be showing at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum from April 18th – April 30th. They are still looking for other venues.

4. Our Changing Landscape Call for Entry
1. You have until February 28th to enter up to 3 art quilts.
2. You need to enter!
3. Please don’t be intimidated by the process. Some of our (self-proclaimed) less technical members have entered successfully – You can do it!!
4. Don’t stress about the photos. Take a picture and if it looks good to you, go with it.
5. If you need help, contact Karen (PC) or Mary Kay (Mac).

5. Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival (KCRQF)
1. Linda Frost will head the SAQA booth at KCRQF. She will be looking for volunteers to set up, tend the booth and take down.
2. Linda Frost would like to decorate the booth with 12” auction quilts made by our regional members. More details to follow, but we are hoping you will all make one (Or more!) for the booth and then donate it to the SAQA benefit auction.

6. Lincoln Conference
