Recap of SAQA KS-MO-OK Quarterly Meeting

February 20, 2016 was the most recent quarterly meeting in Kansas City.  Here's a short review of what the group covered.

·         Nine members attended the meeting at the newly-remodeled Johnson County Central Library.

·         Carmen Rinehart presented a program on “Color.” 

Carmen suggested we tend to use the same colors repeatedly because they have been successful for us in the past. She recommended the book, Color Play by Joen Wolfram. She also talked about research that has been done that analyzes how our brains react to color – tension, calming, stimulating, etc. If we create art for a specific venue it could influence our color choices.

During part of the presentation we played a “card game” using paint and fabric swatches. It was a lot of fun and very informative.  Everyone enjoyed it.  Thank you, Carmen!

·         There has been some confusion regarding the term “face-time” meetings.  Apparently there is an internet program similar to Skype that is named Facetime.  In the future, we will refer to our meetings as quarterly (Kansas City area) get-togethers.

·         Mary Kay reported that SAQA was willing to pay for us to have a SAQA booth at the 2017 Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival.  Linda Frost offered to help coordinate staffing for it.  Registration for KCRQF booth space has not yet begun, so this is not a sure thing yet.

·         We discussed the 2017 Regional Exhibit at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center.  The following items were decided at the quarterly meeting:

o   Exhibit dates are June 2, 2017 through July 29, 2917.

o   It will be a juried exhibit titled, “Our Changing Landscape” which will encompass rather broad interpretations.

o   Artwork dimensions will be a minimum of 24” and a maximum of 48” for both height and width.

o   We will hold an opening reception on June 2, 2017.

o   The committee so far consists of Karen Hansen, Mary Kay Fosnacht, Cindy Parry, Cindy Brendzel, Carol Jones, Carmen Rinehart, Jackie Stoaks, Marney Clausen, and Ada Niedenthal.  If you are interested in helping with this exhibition, please email Karen or Mary Kay.

·         The next quarterly get-together will be May 21 at the Johnson County Central Library.  Andrea Luliak, one of our members from Wyandotte, OK will present a program and demonstration using tissue paper on top of fabric.  We hope you will attend!

Survey Results

Thanks to everyone who participated in the survey for our region and to Mary Kay for putting it all together!  Overall 42 of 69 people completed the survey.  Here are the results!

Congrats to Linda Filby-Fisher

Linda Filby-Fisher has pieces in several outstanding upcoming shows.  If you have the chance to see any of these, please check them out!!

Her piece, Coming A Telling Series, will be in Stories of Migration: Contemporary Artists Interpret Diaspora, a juried textile exhibit, at The George Washington University Textile Museum in Washington, DC April 15 - September 4[www.museum.gwu.ed]. 

Her piece, Unity 6 Medicine Wheel Series, is in SAQA's 25th Anniversary Exhibit which is traveling worldwide for the next 1-2 years. It will be in various locations in Europe Feb 1-Dec 31, 2016 [www.saqa.com].

 

Her pieces, Earth Song 3 and Earth Song 5 Medicine Wheel Series, are in 'Protect The Earth's Environment', a juried art quilt exhibit at the National Tainan Living Arts Center in Tainan City, Taiwan April 30 - May 29[www.taqs.org.tw].

 

Upcoming Workshop with Michele Lasker

Hi all,  Michele Lasker, one of our SAQA members, is a contemporary fiber artist working to expand her teaching portfolio. She will be teaching a workshop on France this upcoming June 2016.  Here's the info on the class:

This workshop will teach you how to be innovative with your freeform knitting and crocheted art. Michele will include basic principles of design as the foundation of this class.  Students will be encouraged to bring charms, beads, ribbons, hand dyed fabric and a variety of yarns and threads to enhance their artwork. There will be time to explore local markets and villages in France, Italy or Switzerland to gather inspiration.

Lunch and Lecture in coordination with Fiber Art exhibit at the Volland Store in Alma Kansas

Mary Elmusa, one of our regional members, has asked me to share this exciting event announcement with everyone.  This exhibit of Debra Smith's contemporary fiber art and Elizabeth Wilson's vintage quilts is running September 20-December 20, 2015 at the Volland Store in Alma, Kansas.  This upcoming Sunday (November 1st) the Surface Design Association is sponsoring a lunch and lecture in association with the exhibit.  For more information, check the Volland Store website at: http://thevollandstore.com/    All are welcome!

You all probably saw it in the recent SAQA e-bulletin, but two of our regional members, Cherrie Hampton and Shin-Hee Chin were recently accepted as SAQA JAMs!  The jurying process is quite involved from what I understand, so kudos to them for their acceptance.

Congratulations to Annie Helmericks-Louder!  Her work is currently being exhibited as part of a 2-person show at the Albercht-Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joesph, MO.  Please check the following link for much more information on the show (here).
